Traditions being criticized and replaced over and over again. In each of these areas there's been revolution after revolution. Apart from the values what's also taken place in the West is this evolutionary process of the development of language, ethics, law, religion, philosophy, the sciences, the arts, institutions, etc. There are places where you can't speak freely and criticism of those in power is punishable by imprisonment or death. There are places where women have never achieved anything close to equal rights under the law. There are still places where child labor is a thing. There are still millions of slaves on this planet. The position we're in now wasn't something quickly or easily arrived at.
WESTERN CIVILIZATION 2 FREE
Western civilization is far from perfect but it's a shining beacon to people who are living and breathing right now and who are not yet free in the ways we in the West are free. I don't know that anyone can fully appreciate how valuable Western civilization is unless you've spent time living with people who hold values which are contrary to the values of Western civilization. Ideas being explored and extended and tested for millennia. There are places where you can't speak freely and criticism of those in power is punishable by imprisonment or death.Īpart from the values what's also taken place in the West is this evolutionary process of the development of language, ethics, law, religion, philosophy, the sciences, the arts, institutions, etc.

Western values aren't things that just naturally occur and everyone sees the rightness of it and agrees that's how we all should live. It's about a lot of things, but one of those things is recognizing that certain values are worth fighting and dying for and that people have fought and died to produce a civilization where those values are protected. Preserving Western civilization isn't about keeping things static.
